Queens
Uppsala Castle Museum and Uppsala Art Museum present a major exhibition exploring power, identity and cultural encounters in sixteenth-century Europe.
The exhibition Queens highlights two historic Renaissance queens – Catherine Jagiellon and Barbara Radziwiłł – through unique historical objects and contemporary art.
Catherine Jagiellon (1526–1583) was a Polish-Lithuanian princess and Queen of Sweden who, through her marriage to John III, played a key role in the relations between Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The exhibition is presented in authentic settings at Uppsala Castle, where Catherine herself lived and spent periods of her life.
Barbara Radziwiłł (1520–1551) was Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania from 1547 to 1551. Her marriage to Sigismund II Augustus of Poland sparked considerable opposition and debate, as the marriage was the result of a secret love affair.
Historical objects from Swedish and international cultural institutions are presented alongside works by contemporary artists, creating new perspectives on female power, faith and emotions, both then and now.
Queens is a collaboration with the National Museum of Lithuania in Vilnius.
