The loved, hated city
Uppsala is growing, and construction is underway throughout Sweden’s fourth largest city. Both now and in the past, the people of Uppsala have been involved in their city’s urban planning andarchitecture. The foundations for today’s urban planning were laid during the time of Queen Christina in the 1640s. Uppsala was transformed from a medieval town, with its characteristic, winding alleys, into an urban city with a grid layout and square blocks.
During the 1950s and the 1960s, there was a drive towards demolition and modernisation. The new and the modern took the place of the old and outdated, and many of Uppsala’s older buildings were demolished. Uppsala’s buildings have changed over the years, while others have been added and many have disappeared completely.
This exhibition shows some of the demolitions and construction projects that have sparked debate, anger and joy. Each period has left its mark on the city.
