Queens

Uppsala Art Museum and Uppsala Castle Museum present an exhibition about power, identity, and cultural encounters.
The exhibition Queens focuses upon two Renaissance Queens, Catherine Jagiellon, and Barbara Radziwiłł. We will meet them through both museums artifacts as well as contemporary art.
Catherine Jagiellon (1526-1583), the Princess from Poland - Lithuania who became the Queen of Sweden. Married to John III, she became an important figure to the relationships between Sweden and the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth. The exhibition will take place in sections of the Uppsala Castle, where Catherine once lived.
Barbara Radziwiłł (1520-1551) queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania 1547–1551. Her marriage to King Sigismund II of Poland was highly controversial, stirring up debates and opposition as their relationship started as a secret love story.
The exhibitions bring together historical artefacts from both Swedish and international Museum and contemporary art, shaping new perspective for us today on women’s power, beliefs, and feelings.
